Abstract

This paper critically investigates gender consciousness in Hausa society through selected Tashe performances. The work analyses Tashe performance arts from the Hausa cultural view of gender consciousness. Gender consciousness is regarded as a central feature in the lives of Hausa men and women, as girls perform Tashe differently from boys. The theoretical framework used is oral-formulaic theory, and the study uses qualitative data analysis by drawing information from the researcher’s memory. Six Tashe performances were adopted for analysis. The study finds that gender consciousness among Hausa people has existed for centuries and that Tashe preserves Hausa culture.
