Abstract

The incidents of insurgency in North-eastern Nigeria have attracted several researchers interested in understanding the concept. The area has experienced different forms of insurgency activities including kidnapping, killing, armed banditry, and attacks on civilians and security agencies. This study examines the variation and relationship in factors responsible for insurgency in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states. Questionnaires, interviews and focus group discussions were used to generate data from IDP camps, while Armed Conflict Location and Events Data was used to identify locations of insurgency activities. Poverty was identified as the highest motivating factor for insurgency, followed by the presence of hideouts.
