Abstract

This study examines the Generic Structure Potential and pragmatic acts of gubernatorial inaugural speeches in Northeast Nigeria. The data are the inaugural speeches of four governors, two from APC and two from PDP, presented in 2015 and 2019 in Gombe, Yobe, Adamawa and Taraba States. The speeches were gathered from Premium Times online newspaper. The study employed Halliday and Hasan's Generic Structure Potential and Mey's Pragmatic Act Theory. Findings showed eight elements marking the generic structure of gubernatorial inaugural speeches, with pragmatic acts negotiated through reference, shared situational knowledge, acknowledgement acts and voice.
