Abstract

This study examines the efficacy of herbs in treating bone injuries as evidence of ethno-science and seeks to demystify the mysticism often attached to traditional bone-healing processes. Rosenstock’s Health Belief Model was adopted. The ethnographic case study used focus group discussions and key informant interviews in four traditional healers’ clinics in Ibadan. Findings revealed that herbs and other materials used in treatment are embodiments of ethno-science with parallels in Western medications. The study concludes that traditional bone-healing practice is largely ethno-science situated within patients’ cultural worldview and mindset.
