Abstract

This study examines the morphology and semantic compositions of selected Yoruba place names as a sub-division of onomastics in Yoruba philosophical and cultural settings. Using descriptive theoretical analysis and clipping, the study explores the etymo-morphological configuration of selected place names in Lagos, Ibadan, Oyo, Ile-Ife, Ijebu Igbo, and Abeokuta. Data were collected through oral interviews with research assistants aged between 60 and 75 years. Findings reveal that many historically relevant place names have been twisted, misspelled, and mispronounced. The study recommends further research on Yoruba place names to reveal morphological truths and socio-cultural meanings.
