Abstract

This paper examines the role of traditional leaders in modern governance as intermediaries between government and local communities. It argues that traditional leaders communicate community needs to government officials while helping to explain policies and decisions to the people. Their knowledge of local customs, traditions, and culture can support policy relevance, development initiatives, conflict mediation, and programme implementation. The paper also notes concerns about inclusivity, accountability, and the balance of power. It concludes that traditional leadership can contribute to modern governance when operating within democratic principles, human rights, transparency, equality, and the rule of law.
