Abstract

This study examines linguistic politeness in relation to face threatening acts in Hausa written fiction, with particular focus on Abdulƙadir Ɗangambo’s Kitsen Rogo. Data were collected from documentary materials and analysed using Brown and Levinson’s Politeness Theory. The study found seventy-nine first distinction face threatening acts in the novel, with orders and requests occurring most frequently. Other acts include suggestions, advice, remindings, threats, warnings, and dares. The study implies that face threatening acts are inevitable in conversation because speakers often need to communicate messages in ways that may threaten either the speaker’s or hearer’s face.
