Abstract

This study examines selected English acronyms and abbreviations that are ambiguous in nature. It explains how many acronyms in English can have more than one full meaning and how such ambiguity may depend on context, register, discipline, region, or local usage. The study adopts Galen’s theory of ambiguity and uses random sampling to select English acronyms and abbreviations for analysis. Findings reveal that many English acronyms are ambiguous because they carry multiple senses across different disciplines, registers, and fields.
