Abstract

This study explores the effects of kidnapping on community trust and security in Katsina State, Nigeria. It focuses on how kidnapping affects trust in government, security forces, neighbors, and social cohesion. Using Routine Activity Theory, the study employs qualitative methods including key informant interviews, in-depth interviews, and focus group discussions with community members in kidnapping-prone areas. Findings reveal that persistent kidnapping has eroded trust in government institutions and security agencies, created widespread fear, weakened traditional support systems, and undermined community security.
