Abstract

This study examines the generic classification of correspondences used by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma chapter, during its 2021 strike action. The study identifies social and academic conventions and common features that characterize formal and semi-formal written communication, including address, date, salutation, text, complimentary close, and writer’s name. Using an eclectic approach anchored in generic analysis, the paper explores ASUU’s communicative discourse. Findings show that formal correspondences provided union members and stakeholders with required information aimed at resolving conflict.
