Abstract

Large numbers of Christians globally misinterpret the teachings of Islam, and Boko Haram has raised additional misconceptions and hatred against Islam and Muslims as a result of the ways in which the group has killed innocent people. It was observed that some Christians spread misconceptions against Islam through social media, radio, and other platforms, including claims that the insurgents target Christians only, that Boko Haram was set up by Muslims against the Goodluck administration, and that it is part of a process of Islamizing the nation. These misinterpretations and perceptions affect Islam and Muslims in Rivers State socially, economically, politically, and in Da’awah activities. The aim of the work is to determine the real teaching of Islam and address wrong perceptions. The researchers used questionnaires, interviews, and discussions. The paper finds that insurgent activities created more disunity among Nigerians and distorted the image of Islam and Muslims.
