Abstract

This paper studies the impact of the 1953 independence motion moved by Anthony Enahoro and its implications for alien rule in Nigeria. Using historical and analytical methods, the study examines major issues that formed the basis for self-determination agitations, including perceived marginalization and narrow economic and political exclusion. It argues that although the motion did not immediately lead to independence in 1956, it mobilized nationalists and strengthened the realization that independence was inevitable. The paper recommends continued study of the speech as a source of inspiration for good governance.
