Abstract

This paper assesses the impact of training on the ECOWAS Standby Force, particularly its efforts to protect civilians during conflict. The study examines whether training enhances operational effectiveness and equips personnel to fulfil their mandate. Using organizational learning theory, a qualitative approach, secondary sources, and thematic analysis, the study finds that training enhances operational readiness, humanitarian law compliance, community relations, and deployment effectiveness. It also identifies inconsistencies in training quality and deployment readiness. The paper concludes that civilian protection is vital to peacekeeping effectiveness in West Africa.
