Abstract

This paper explores polygamy as a tool of oppression against women through a feminist reading of Adebayo’s Stay With Me. It examines the cultural context of polygamy in Yoruba society, including its links to wealth, status, political alliances, and infertility. Through textual analysis and cultural feminism, the study focuses on Yejide and the psychological and emotional effects of polygamy on women. Findings highlight familial coercion, lack of mutual consultation, competition among co-wives, and mental pressure. The study recommends autonomy in marital choices, premarital counselling, legal safeguards, and careful consideration of the implications of polygamy.
