Abstract

This study examines the economic impact of Boko Haram insurgency on public buildings in Borno State and the causes of its escalation. It surveys and enumerates destroyed public buildings and applies an enhanced bottom-up method of costing violence to estimate improved and more secure replacement costs. Findings indicate that destroyed public buildings require a substantial sum to replace with improved and secured versions. The study also identifies security forces and Boko Haram as major factors in the escalation of the insurgency. It recommends reform of Nigeria’s security apparatus on civil disorder.
