Abstract

The main thrust of this paper is to examine the role of organisational management in the motivation of police officers in Nigeria. The provision of security to safeguard the protection of lives, properties, welfare and right of citizens is the primary responsibility of a responsible government. The study adopts literature review, whereby secondary data have been gathered concerning the subject matter. Hierarchy of needs theory and total quality management theory were adopted. The study found that numerous challenges hamper personnel motivation, including manpower shortage, bribery and corruption, politicization and commercialization of the police, poor public perception, nepotism in leadership appointment and promotions, and obsolete information and communications technology equipment. The study recommends that the Nigeria Police should be de-politicized by giving priority to merit and providing an effective reward system to motivate personnel.
