Abstract

Arms and ammunitions are the conventional and overt weapons used in combat. The planning and execution of successful military campaigns also depend to a large extent on covert strategies, including intelligence gathering and processing. Nigeria has faced security challenges for years, some of which are alleged to emanate from outside the country. This study investigated the availability of French language experts in selected security institutions in Kaduna and Zaria. Using a survey, questionnaires were distributed to senior officials of targeted institutions. Analyses revealed that none of the eight military and paramilitary institutions visited had a French language expert among staff. The article recommends that competence in French be made a prerequisite for recruitment and promotion of key personnel in the security sector.
