Abstract

This paper explores the contribution of language to learning and research that will propel development of a nation and the role the Federal Government plays in ensuring the development of orthographies of indigenous languages vis-à-vis enhancement of research. The paper examines how individuals’ linguistic behaviors help them in learning and evaluation of the rigors in any fields of study, especially sciences. It discusses two interrelated and interdependent linguistic variables: cognitive factors, the activities of neural networks in the brain, and how individuals use language in learning and research as a panacea for enhancement of research and development in society. Findings reveal that students would fare better in research if their indigenous languages were given pedagogical priority in line with the National Language Policy on Education.
