Abstract

The paper examines the concept of intertextuality as a theoretical and methodological strategy in the analysis of ECOWAS Peacekeeping Agreement Discourse. The study is based on Norman Fairclough’s model of intertextuality and adheres to the principle that every text is dialogical, gaining meaning in relation to other texts. The corpus consists of ten purposively selected ECOWAS peacekeeping agreements analysed using the frameworks of Fairclough and Bazerman. Findings reveal that intertextual relations were frequently expressed through paraphrase and citation. The paper concludes that intertextuality in the data occurs at a relatively localized level, reflecting manifest intertextuality.
