Abstract

Colonialism characterized and promoted specific biasness that it introduced to colonized communities. This was to preserve relative order for continuance of the colonial project on the exploitation of people and their resources. In Bauchi Province, to which Toro District belonged, the British introduced the indirect rule system to administer the land. This paper seeks to unravel the nature of the impacts of British rule on the pattern of relations in Toro District in the twentieth century. It examines changes in interpersonal and inter-communal relations through colonial policies of divide and rule, taxation and boundary reorganisation. The research used historical methodology by collecting and interpreting oral and written sources.
