Abstract

The decision of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger Republic to withdraw from ECOWAS reflects a complex interplay of political, economic and security dynamics in the region. This article examines the reasons behind their departure, focusing on security and geopolitical implications and proposing solutions for Nigeria. Employing qualitative methods, the study reveals that the potential withdrawal of these countries from ECOWAS poses significant challenges to West African border security. Proposed solutions include Nigeria exploring security collaborations beyond ECOWAS, strengthening ties with neighbouring countries and international partners, enhancing preparedness for humanitarian crises and strategically reassessing its regional leadership role.
