Abstract

Literature is an influential institution in post-colonial Africa. African writers have been prominent in struggles to build modern democratic societies on the ruins of the colonial state and against the brutalities of many dictatorial post-independence regimes. The post-colonial stage saw satire, ambiguity and hybridity become dominant motifs of African fiction. This study examines post-colonialism in Elnathan John’s Becoming Nigerian: A Guide. The study reveals the satiric tone of the text and the depth of decay that has invaded modern democratic Nigeria. It concludes that the text is modern post-colonial African literature focused on new realities after political independence.
