Abstract

With support from USAID, the Northern Education Initiative collaborated with the National Commission for Colleges of Education and introduced the Early Grade Reading programme in Bauchi and Sokoto states in 2015. Through the use of two textbooks, Let’s Read and its Hausa version Mu Karanta, mother-tongue was introduced in teaching reading at the early grade from primary one to three. This paper explored the programme in Bauchi State to reveal its successes and shortcomings. Findings revealed significant improvement in pupils’ reading performance, while teachers lamented the lack of refresher trainings to improve implementation.
