Abstract

Through careful examination of Tess Onwueme’s The Reign of Wazobia, it becomes clear that the playwright presents a patriarchal society in Nigeria in which women are persistently exploited economically, socio-culturally subjugated and politically oppressed. Through a sociological reading of the text, this paper criticises the author’s strategy for resolving the unfair treatment of the female gender in Ilaa of Anioma kingdom. The essay argues that the playwright’s approach to resolving persistent oppression, double standard and unfair treatment of the female gender is unethically scandalous and unrealisable. The play represents Delta women of Nigeria as active, resilient, self-willed and indestructible characters.
