Abstract

This study on lingua-stylistic analysis of selected poems of Tanure Ojaide identifies the stylistic and cohesive devices that manifest in nine purposively selected poems from The Beauty I Have Seen: A Trilogy. Halliday and Hasan’s Cohesion in English served as the theoretical framework. The five cohesive devices of reference, substitution, ellipsis, conjunctions and lexical cohesion were analysed. Findings showed that reference had the highest frequency of use, while ellipsis registered the lowest percentage. The study reveals that Ojaide employed stylistic devices such as capitalisation, compounding, affixation, alliteration, assonance, repetition and figurative devices.
