Abstract

The essence of the state is primarily to secure lives and properties of citizens. Security is therefore an integral component of the global system. This paper interrogates the posture of actors in national security with a view to identifying their thematic roles and implications for Nigeria’s national security. It argues that non-state actors constitute major drivers of insecurity in Nigeria. It also identifies proliferation of small arms and light weapons, ungoverned spaces, unemployment, greed and grievance among the causes of the increased role of non-state actors in insecurity. The paper recommends good governance and non-kinetic approaches to national security challenges.
